I think the credit has to go to his mother. In my academics we had a lesson “Sunny Days” taken from one of his article or book I don't remember that. When he was a kid, he was playing with his mother. He said in one of the paragraph that he his mother was bowling and he used to bat. Once he had hit hard to his mom and started bleeding from her nose. But still she didn't mind much and started bowling again. So I think it may be his mother as one of the inspiration.

Playing cricket was in the family’s very soul. Gavaskar’s father was a good club cricketer in his days and a keen student of the game. Gavaskar’s mother was the first player with whom he would play cricket. She used to bowl to him in the small gallery of their house where he and his mother played their ‘daily match’ with a tennis ball. His uncle, Madhav Mantri had played for India; and whenever Gavaskar would go to his house, he would hold his pullover and caress it longingly. He would often tell Gavaskar that if he wished to possess a similar pullover for himself, he would have to work very hard for it. So all this cricketing environment in the family helped him become a great cricketer.
