Answer:

How do farmers get their seeds?

Delightfully capable. Surprisingly affordable.

Farmers buy the seeds of registered cultivars that match exactly what kind of tomatoes, corn or carrots they want to grow. They may want to grow large, juicy early tomatoes for selling at the farmer’s market, they may also want to grow plum tomatoes for a big order they fill every year for a tomato sauce cannery. They will need to select the cultivars that match those goals. They may have demand for dwarf novelty carrots that come in yellow and purple for the farmer’s market but they need long, straight carrots for the grocery store order.

It has been done this way for hundreds of years. I think the first commercial seed company was established in 1800 or so and before that they bought carefully selected seeds on a less formal basis.
