India contributed immensely towards the British war effort during the First World War. The contribution was with respect to human resource, food and supplies and financial assistance. Thousands of Indians lost their lives or were crippled for life. Huge quantities of food grains were sent out of the country for the soldiers fighting the war. As war expenditure increased the British increased taxes in India. This had a negative impact on the Indian economy. Prices of essential goods increased, there was shortage of food, inflation and unemployment reached unprecedented levels. This made life difficult for the common people and in general the standard of living went down. But at the same time some enterprising Indians took advantage of the situation and were able to earn enormous wealth through trade and speculative activities.
