• The First World War created a new economic condition and political situation.
• The First World War led to a huge increase in the defense expenditure which was financed by war loans and by increasing taxes: customs duties were raised and income tax was introduced.
• Through these war years prices increased-doubling between 1913 and 1918 to extreme hardship for the common people who were called upon to supply as soldiers, and the forced recruitment in rural areas that caused widespread anger.
• Then in 1918-1919 and 1920-1921, in many parts of India crops failed , this resulted in acute shortages of food.
• According to the census of 1921, 12 to 13 million people perished as a result of famines and the epidemic.
• Therefore, all these points led to the emergence of nationalism in India during the First World War-I.
