Ustad Bismillah Khan belonged to a well known family of musicians from Bihar. He was a renowned shehnai player who always improvised new melodies on shenai. Since his childhood he trained shehnai under the guidance of his uncle Ali Baksh ‘Vilayatu.

Bismillah Khan used to perform shenai sessions at the banks of river ganga because the flowing water of river inspired him to be determined and keep flowing like it and make the way through any problem with his strong self-belief. The flowing water of ganga flew creating different musical notes which encouraged the Bismillah Khan to improvise and invent new ragas that were earlier considered to be impossible to be created through shenai.
