In the year 1600 the East India Company (EIC) received a charter from England's monarch, Queen Elizabeth I, giving it the exclusive right to trade with the East, without any British merchants competing. However the royal charter couldn't hinder other European powers like the Portuguese, Netherlands, and French. And all those European firms wanted to buy the same stuff from India-fine cloth and spice standard. As rivalry grew, profits declined & European trading firms began building forts and battling one another.   As more business came, there were more disputes with Indian rulers, and keeping their business separate from Indian politics had become challenging for European traders.

Explanation:

  • The first English factory was established in Bengal 1651 on the Hugli River banks . As their expanded, the East India Company persuaded traders and merchants to come and settle near the factory.
  • The Company began constructing a fort around the settlement of Hugli in 1696. It also tried to bribe Mughal officials in granting the "Company Zamindari rights" over three villages, one of which was Calcutta.
  • It also persuaded the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb to issue a "farman", an official order, that would grant the EIC  a duty-free trade right.
  • The company's employees also undertook private trade , and it was expected that they would pay duty. However, they rejected, angering Bengal's Nawab, Murshid Quli Khan and resulted in fierce battles
  • After Aurangzeb 's death, Bengal's Nawabs, Murshid Quli Khan, Alivardi Khan, and, one after the other, Siraj Ud Daulah declined to give the Business concessions. Robert Clive commanded the Company's army at Plassey in 1757, against Siraj Ud Daulah. THe COmpany won, and the main reason for the Nawab 's failure was that the forces which was led by one of his officers, Mir Jafar, never fought the battle.
  • After suppressing Siraj Ud Daulah, Clive had managed to secure Mir Jafar 's support by promising to make him nawab. Plassey 's fight has become famous because it was the Company's first major win in India.
