How did the Great Depression affect the development of automobiles?

The Great Depression had a large impact on the automobile industry because the majority of American families were not able to afford such luxuries. Most families were barely able to afford food for themselves, let alone buy a car. This lack of interest caused a large number of employees in the industries to be fired, slowing down the rate of production and de-incentivized further research into improving the quality and efficiency of manufacturing automobiles.
This is just what I have off the top of my head, so if you would like more information or a list of sources, please let me know and I will provide them for you.
