The Golden Bowl by Jatak Tales is a story of two pot sellers, one named Serivan a Bodhisattva in the Kingdom of Seri who was honest, and one another was a greedy pot seller. Both these pot sellers used to sell pots and pans in the city of Andhapura
Explanation:
- When Serivan came to know about the gold pot, he had told the old lady and her granddaughter about it. He did not cheat them by telling a lie. He also paid the old lady 500 coins and gave all his pots and pans in exchange for the gold pot.
- The greedy seller who had come to take the pot the next day from the old lady, came to know that the old lady had realised that the pot was made of gold and that the honest seller had taken the pot in exchange of money and wares, was angry and insulted
- At the thought of having known that his lie was caught and regretting the loss, the greedy seller was filled with sorrow and disappointment. He was also maddened and lost control over himself and threw away his pots and money and tore his clothes and started yelling that he would avenge Serivan for having interfered with his plans.
- The greedy man rushed to the riverside to stop the boat in which Serivan was travelling, however Serivan had told the boatman not to stop the boat. Seeing this the greedy seller started shouting with jealous and hatred and with all that excitement the greedy seller’s heart burst and he died.
