It is said that, there was a shepherd named Magnes, who lived in ancient Greece. He used to take his herd of goats and sheep to the nearby mountains for grazing . He would take a stick with him to control his herd . The stick had a small piece of iron attached at one end . One day he was surprised to find that he had to pull hard to free his stick from a rock on the mountainside. It seemed as if the stick was being attracted to the stone. It is said that this is how natural magnets were discovered.

The first magnets were not invented,it is naturally occurring mineral found in the nature called magnetite.The shepherd Magnes,the most popular legend accounting fir the discovery of magnet is that of an elderly cretan shepherd named Magnes. Once he was herding sheep in an area of Northern Greece (Magnesia) , about 4,000 years ago....Lodstones contains magnetite, a natural magnetic material Fe304.
