How did the Greeks realise that magnetite had magnetic properties

A story goes about 2500 years ago there lived a shepherd named magnes in ancient greece . everyday he tahes his sheep to the nearby mountains for grazing . the stick he carried with him had iron tip on the side. he discovered that the end attracts to the rocks. on further investigation Greeks found that the rocks had the property of attracting iron .

It is story when a herder was taking its stick and sheep for grazing. He sat on the small stone the herder was carrying a stone which was metallic at the end.  As we knowstone is magnetic so it attract the steel road. The herder fill scared and ran away  after that incident science research on it
