Before Harold was born, the Brambles were quite comfortable with the fact of Bill Bramble being a professional boxer. Bill was in fact proud of his accomplishments in boxing. However, their child, Harold defied the laws of heredity and became a scholar instead of a sports person. He turned out to be a prodigy. His model behaviour developed a complex in his parents' mind regarding his father's profession and they decided to keep this fact hidden from him. His birth made Bramble change into a practitioner of shady deeds. They made every possible effort to hide the truth from Harold and told him that his father is a commercial traveller. So, basically while Harold's birth and academic brilliance brought them a lot of pride and happiness, they also suffered from constant guilt and tension.
