How did the Holocaust affect Canada?

The Holocaust has had a major impact on Canada’s identity. The Holocaust occurred in 1941-1945 and involved the systematic extermination of nearly 6 million Jews. Due to the closed door policy that was in place for the duration of World War 2, very few Jewish immigrants were allowed into Canada. However, soon after the end of world war 2, the closed door policy ended and roughly 40 000 survivors came to Canada (Schoenfeld “The Post War Period”). This influenced Canada in many ways. First of all, we gained a greater Jewish population. This led to a more multicultural society and a greater workforce. Additionally, perhaps out of guilt over the closed door policy, Canada greatly increased the number of immigrants let in each year and improved immigrants living conditions. It also indirectly led to the drafting of the UDHR (Universal Declaration of Human Rights) and the creation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and thus cultural equality in Canada. Furthermore, as a result of the Holocaust, some Canadians have devoted their lives to tracking down Nazis and bringing them to justice. This was accompanied by great success but many now question if it is still worth pursuing. Many feel it would not serve a purpose to arrest an 80 year old man for crimes committed decades ago. However there are others who believe that justice must still be served no matter how long ago the crime occurred. To sum up the Holocaust has greatly affected our workforce, cultural identity, beliefs instilled in youths and our devotion to justice.
