Shehnai was first played in the Shah's chambers and it was played by a barber (nai). So it was named as 'shehnai'.

Shehnai was first played by a barber 'nai" at the Shah chambar "sheh". He chose a pipe with natural hollow stem. He made holes on its body and played on. Thus the instrument Shehnai get its name.
