Smaller cates or jatis came into emergence with the varnas. Many tribes and social groups were taken into caste based society and were given the status of the jatis. Differently specialised artisans like smiths, masons, and carpenters who were recognized as the separate jatis by the Brahmanas.

- Jati or caste established a social hierarchy. Ranking of a person in the society was determined by the caste to which he/she belonged. On the basis of jatis, jati panchayats were formed.
