" The Khilafat movement (1919–1924) was a pan-Islamic, political campaign launched by Muslims in British India to influence the British government and to protect the Ottoman Empire during the aftermath of World War I. "

It is mostly a Muslim religious movement, but they did help in the independance for India.

The decision to call of the disobedience campaign by Gandhi weakened the Hindu-Muslim unity, but the Muslims were determined to carry on with the Khilafat Movement. Unfortunately, they cared more about the fate of the Khalifa than did the new rulers of Turkey. In 1922, the Sultan was deprived of Political power. Two years later, the new ruler of Turkey, Kemal Attaturk abolished the Khilafat and exiled the Khalifa, Muhammad VI. IT made no difference what Indian Muslims or BritishPoliticians wanted. The Turks themselves had abolished the Khilafat. Consequently, the Khilafat Movement in India also came to an End

1.the Chora Chori incident 1923:
Police fired up on an armed protesters in the village of Chori Chora 22 police were burnt to death by protesters,Gandhi called off his non cooperation movement. this left the Khilafat movement in the lurch

2.The abolition of Caliphate 1924:
The Grand national assembly of Turkey abolished the office of calif and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad supported this decision and urged the Indians to leave the Turkey to its own fate and concentrate on internal problems.
