The albatross was believed to have helped the mariners in finding their way back.

Whether it was mere coincidence, we do not know but as soon as the albatross came into vision,so did their hope of regaining life.We see that for a while, the bird was given life's value by all those onboard, feeding it,playing with it, and so,it basically became a part of their life and all was well and good. But,as soon as the love they had for the albatross diminished, the mariners faced hard luck. The condition grew much worse with all that they hoped for right in front of them, yet somehow unattainable. This is clear from the lines"water, water, everywher.water, water, not a drop to drink" However, this time, they cannot hope for the albatross to help them as his life was ended by the very poet sailor.

This goes on to show us that we as humans, cannot be fully independent and always has somebody to thank for.

This was an answer I wrote for my mock boards last year. You can enhance it if you want but I think this is what the board people are looking for.
