The knowledge of ancient texts helped reformers to promote new laws in that the past texts were reviewed to adjust the laws to the current situation.
The written texts provided the based over which new laws are made now. So were it not for the ancient written texts new laws could have been difficult to formulate.

Whenever the reformers wished to stop or challenge a superstitious and evil practice which is harmful, they searched a sentence or verse in various sacred texts of ancient period.
There were many verses which supported their thinking or view point.
After that they suggested that the existing practice was against the tradition of early period.
