Bahadur Shah Zafar was the last Mughal ruler after the death of Aurangzeb. During the 1857 revolt rebellions wanted a leader who would guide them to overthrow the Britishers. They decided that their leader would be Bahadur Shah Zafar and he had given his support. After the revolt, Bahadur Shah Zafar was tried in court and sentenced to life imprisonment. He and his wife Zeenat Mahal were sent to prison in Rangoon in October 1858. He died in the Rangoon jail in November 1862.
