How did the local people in the areas conquered by Napoleon react to French rule? Explain.

i) Peasants, artisans, workers and businessmen enjoyed this newly found freedom.
(ii) They realized that Uniform laws and standardized weights and measures and a common national currency would be more helpful in a trade as it would facilitate the movement and exchange of goods and capital from one region to another.
(iii) Increase in taxes, censorship and forced conscription in French armies were seen as outweighing the advantage of administrative changes which Napoleon brought.

a. Napoleon who had conquered large part of Europe brought about administrative changes, uniform civil code, abolished feudal system. All this helped in creating a sense of unification.
b. In many places like Holland, Switzerland the French army was initially welcomed
c But later the French imperialistic designs outweighed the advantages.
d. Areas occupied by the French were made subservient to the French needs.
e. Imposition of Censorship.
f. Increased taxation, forced conscription .
g. Lack of political freedom all compelled people to turn a hostile attitude towards the French.
