Aryans were the most influential tribes and were called as 'janas' .This gave rise to the term Janapada where Jana means 'people' and Pada means 'Foot' . Gradually , powerful Janapadas conquered the lesser Janapadas and gained importance and prominence . These large Janapadas began to gain larger territories and became more powerful and were transformed into mahajanapadas
