He said if his body touch the earth the earth will get Distroyrd because he never done any bad thing or gone against His darma. So he wanted to make a bed which will stay between his body and earth. Duryodana brought pillows made of feather but bhisma rejected it saying he who going to die don't need it and asked arjuna send arrow to support his head which was hanging since there was no arrow passed through his head.
Thats why all the arrow except those under his head pointing downwards.
