In the early vedic period there were no religion. Religion was decided on the basis on karma. Like who was interested in teaching was called as brahman. Who fights and saves other was called kshatriya.

But with the arrival of late vedic period, this was changed. Now religion was based on birth, not on karma. Who ever born on brahman family was a brahman, no matter if he is willing to do the works of brahman
