It is thought that subatomic particles, like quarks, leptons and mesons, were the first things with mass to have ever been formed in our universe. We now strongly suspect that such “subatomics” combined with one another to form protons, electrons and neutrons.
Such chemistry among these particles cannot be reproducibly replicated in actual experiments, so this kind of combining is hypothetical. Wherever these protons, electrons and neutrons actually originated, it is just so tempting to continue with this: so . . . . as the electrons and protons whirled about in the early universe, one of each collided with one another to form the first hydrogen atom.
Some day, we may find evidence that it happened this way, and that analogous collisions involving neutrons led to the formation of the isotopes of hydrogen and helium.
