As the roar increased to a thunder and the stern moved up the face of the wave, the narrator had thought for a moment that the ship would be able to override it. However a tremendous explosion shook the deck. A torrent of green and white water broke over the ship, the narrator's head smashed into the wheel and he was aware of flying over board and sinking below the waves. He had accepted his approaching death with equanimity and felt quite peaceful until his head popped out of the water unexpectedly.
