Philosopher s such as JOhN lock And JEAn Jacques rosseau wrote books such as two treaties of government and social contract in which they gave ideas about how the government should be .. Charles montesqieu in his book showed the form of government the judiciary etc which had great effect on the French society
Growing middle class
The 18th century witnessed the emergence of social groups termed as middle class who earned their wealth through an expanding overseas trade and from manufacturer of good. In addition to merchants and manufactures the third estate included professionals such as lawyer or administrative officials. All of these were educated and believed that no group in the society should be privileged by birth. A person's social position must depend on his merit.
Role of philosphers
- John Locke In his 'Two treaties og government' Locke sough to refuse the doctrine of divine and absolute right of monarch.
- Rousseau Rousseau in 'Social Contract' carried the idea forward, proposing a government based on social contract between people and the representatives.
- Montesquieu In The spirit of laws Montesquieu proposed a division of power within the government between the legislature, the executive and the judiciary.
