This is really an Aesop’s Fable in verse form, a wonderfully tongue-in-cheek effort by a poet also remembered for his Christian verse, for his tireless work for the abolition of slavery and for being among Jane Austen’s favourites. A rather self-important nightingale is taught a lesson in humility and mutual respect by a little glow-worm.
