If you are thinking India got independence because of non-violence , it is completely wrong thought process. It is another answer how really we got independence, lot to do with Bose, Navy and economics, some parts of Gandhi.
Let us look at how non-violence helped the Indian independence, first and foremost until Gandhi arrived at the scene, INC is of elitist organization and lacked connect to local population across India. It is brilliant mind of Gandhi to connect all the local populace for Independence, if Violence was used as a mechanism it would have backfired as it would Indians killing Indians ( 90% of Army at that time were Indians) . Being poor and no strength ( financial and resource) violence struggle would have died down easily, case in point although Bose INA and Japan captured Rangoon, could not hold (even if local populace was supporting INA) . By going Non-violent way Gandhi gained moral strength and gained immensely on British, which appealed to large part of Hindu population ( Hindu philosophy is of don't do harm others unnecessarily ) it is awakening with minimal sacrifices...that's why it is popular.... Gandhi should be credited for bringing everybody in the national freedom movement, but saying non-violence got us freedom is ridiculous at the best.
