It helped them by breaking the ice around the ship and provided a way for the ship to steer.
Second, when fog and mist appears, they realise that the bird was a bad luck for them which rendered the foggy and misty weather.
This shows us that how confused, double and fickle minded and foolish the mariners were.
They changed their opinions according to their convenience.
