The people admired at the statue of the happy prince as the statue is gilded all over from head to toe with thin leaves of gold, the eyes are made of two bright sapphires and the hilt of the sword has a red ruby.

EXPLANATION:

In the fairy tale Happy Prince, the older taller lover and a younger smaller beloved. The lover is the statue and beloved member is a swallow.

The prince stands on the 'pedestal' above the city with 'sapphire eyes', from which the tears are falling. He cries over the oppressed people.  

He requests his swallow to remove the sapphire from the eyes and ruby from is sword pommel to give them to the three suffering human beings.
