In the story, ‘The Letter’ Ali visits the post office daily to check whether he received a letter from his daughter. But everyday his wait would turn vain and would walk back disappointed since no letter would come in his name.
Looking at his condition and his foolishness of expecting a 'letter' from his daughter who went against him, the 'post office staff' made fun of him. They would make funny remarks and even call out his name falsely stating he got a letter without understanding his pain.
Even when he was very sick, he met the 'postmaster' to ask if he got a letter from his daughter but the postmaster also scolded him back. Ali even bribed a clerk with few gold coins to deliver his letter at his grave when he dies. Only after Ali’s death, the postmaster understands Ali’s real pain and keeps the letter at Ali’s grave when he finally got a letter from his daughter.
