How did the people want to honour the captain on the shore? How does this contrast with some dream the narrator sees on the deck?

Answer:

The captain in the poem refers to Abraham Lincoln and the ship represents the United States. Lincoln successfully led his nation through the turmoil of the civil war and brought an end to the slavery in America. The theme of the poem is that victory comes with a price.

In "O Captain, My Captain", his extended metaphor, the Captain directly represents Lincoln and the ship that arrives represents America. ... These lines show the metaphor of the victory of the civil war and the assassination of Lincoln very soon after.

Answer:

The people welcomed with bells and are exulting, the flag flung and also the bugle trills. The poet is surprised to see that the ship's captain, who guided the whole crew to the land from within a fearful fight, now himself lying to the deck covered with blood.this seemed like a dream to the poet.

Thanking you.
