The match girl was sent to sell the matches and earn money. But, her matches fell into the gutter and were spoiled. If she didn't get money, her her father would scold and beat her.
The Happy Prince saw her plight and asked the swallow to pluck out the sapphire from one of his eyes and deliver it to the little girl. Upon receiving the sapphire she was very happy and and went home smiling.
