In this poem, Charles Mackay describes an incident when he was going through a tough period in his life.

He was lying on the street injured and bleeding when a proud man came to help him.

He did not even bother to speak to the poet but helped in treatment by simply giving him a piece of gold.

This Shows that he was proud of his wealth and he could help others by only giving them money.

Answer:

The proud man looked at the poet coldly i.e, without any emotions. He did not even offer words of sympathy but he gave the poet gold (money).
