1) they need wood for making railway lines
2) they need area to expend lines they got area by cutting Forrest

During the British rule, expansion of railways was done at a large scale.

The expansion wasn’t done keeping in mind the effects the expansion will have on the nature.

Deforestation was a common thing. Trees were cut for lying of railway lines which affected the environment on a large scale.
