The regional kings were patrons of music. Medieval India was the centre of Bhakti movement where many saints came together irrespective of their differences. Bhakti movement helped in the strengthening people's belief in God and spiritual growth. The bhajans gained patronage of the regional kings and new musical instruments such as sitar , sarod , sarangi were invented due to the fusion of Indian and Persian cultures. Sufi qawwalis were also popular.
