Miss Sullivan had to work very hard to win her way in to Helen's heart. Initially Helen put quite a lot of resistance to whatever Miss Sullivan tried to teach her. Since Helen had had no training of any type in learning, the innovative techniques Miss Sullivan used were not accepted at all by Helen. Helen was very adamant in not giving up her preconceptions. For example Helen refused to learn the word w-a-t-e-r. She confused it with m-u-g. And even broke the doll in anger. But Miss Sullivan held her patience. That day the wise teacher took Helen out to the well-house. She put Helen's hand under the spout; the cool sensation of the stream thrilled Helen. Then Miss Sullivan spelled the word w-a-t-e-r again in her hand. This time Helen understood her teacher's greatness, and never ever opposed her.
