It got its name in the years after WWII, when the Nazi regime was dismantled during Allied occupation. When it became clear in the late 1940s that the Soviet Union intended to keep its occupied portion of Germany as a communist satelite state, the Western Allies (Britain, France, and the US) combined their occupied portions together and reconstituted West Germany as an independent republic. When Soviet forces withdrew from East Germany and the Berlin Wall was torn down in 1990, the West quickly voted to reunify with the East and form a new united Deutchland (the German name for their country).
