The rule of East India Company affected the tribes very badly. The powers of the tribal heads were took away. The tribal heads had to pay tribute to the British. The British wanted the tribes to settle down for this will make it easy for them to collect revenues. So they introduced the Land Settlement Act.Certain people were made landlords to collect the rents. From now on the tribes had to pay rent to the landlord and the landlord in-turn had to pay it to the British. The new Forest law introduced by the British made certain forests to be reserved forests and the entry of tribes to these forests were not permitted by law.The tribes were not allowed to move freely in the forest. They were not allowed to practice their culture of using forest products directly, and practicing jhum cultivation.
