Ryotwari settlement gave rise to the landlordism because of the following reason-
1. In the system the Zamindars and the Lambardars didn’t collect the land revenue but revenue was taken directly from the ryots.
2. It made the ryots or the cultivators landlords as the revenue was given directly not via any medium.

- In the Ryotwari areas, the land revenue was fixed and very high level.
- Unlike the Zamindari areas, it was fixed for 20 to 30 years.
- After the expiry of the tenure period, the revenue was so high that in the beginning, it had to be collected by force.
- Soon, however, the prices rose faster than the land revenue and the ryots found it more profitable to employ tenants to cultivate their lands and receive rent from them.
- Soon, the Ryotwari area too was full of landlords who rented out their lands to helpless tenants for very high rents.
- The tenants had to pay rent that was 3 to 7 times more than the land revenue paid by the roads to the government .
- As a result the practices of exploiting the poor peasants rose and the landlords also lost the interest of investing in lands to improve agriculture.
- In this way the ryotwari system gave rise to landlordism.
