The Buddha established of monastic order called the sangha. It included monks nuns, and novices. The Buddhist monks and nuns were known as the bikkhus and bhikkhunis respectively . They usually stayed in monasteries and led a very simple life. The membership of the Buddhist order was open to people of all castes.
