The sparrows shared an intimate relationship with the author’s grandmother. They mourned her death by positioning themselves at various places on the floor from the verandah right up to where her body was placed. They kept silent and did not chirp even once. The sparrows also did not pay attention to the bread crumbs that the author’s mother brought for them. When the grandmother’s body was taken away, they rose and flew away silently.

The grandmother lay dead wrapped in the red shroud. When they carried the grandmother's corpse off they flew away quietly. Next morning the sweeper swept the bread crumbs into the dustbin. The sparrows paid their silent tribute to the grand old lady. This is how they paid the tribute to the grandmother.
