The population of france rose from about 23 million in 1715 to 28 million in 1789.This led to rapid increase in the demand for food grains. production of grains could keep pace with demand . so price of bread rose rapidly. most workers Were employed as labourers in workshops whose owner fixed their wages but wages did not keep pace with rise in prices .Things become worse when hail or drought reduced the harvest. This led to subsistence crisis.

The poorest can no longer buy bread
food riots took place
weaker bodies due to scarcity of grain
disease epidemics
and results in. number of deaths.
