Following King Gyanendra 's 4-year autocratic rule which failed to defeat the Maoists, a major civil revolt was launched in the year 2006 by a coalition of the Maoists & political parties which forced the king to step down, took the Maoists into the peace process, & formed a democratic republic by the year 2008.

Explanation:

  • The "Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist)" had declared a war on Nepal 's govt on 13th February 1996, with the intention of imposing a Communist rule. Before that there had been plenty of rebellions.  A few of the of them were cruelly crushed under the armed forces' heavy boots & others had co-opted to the scheme
  • The entire royal community, such as "King Birendra & Queen Aishwarya" with a host of their closest relatives were killed by a "gruesome tragedy" on 1st June 2001. The king's  only brother and surviving relative King, Gyanendra, was proclaimed king.
  • For some time, King Gyanendra abided by the elected govt & then later he dismissed the Parliament that was elected Parliament so as to exercise full powers. The democratic parties that concentrated most energies on Kathmandu initiated another "People's movement" in the year April of 2006, leading to a 19-day curfew.
  • King Gyanendra finally gave up his influence and re-established the parliament. The "Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) 2006", dedicated to democracy and stability for the development of the nation and its people, was signed by Prime Minister Koirala and the Maoist President Prachanda on 21 November 2006.
  • On 10 April 2008, elections to the Constituent Assembly were held. Nepal was proclaimed the "Federal Democratic Republic" by the newly elected "constituent assembly" on 28th May 2008 to end the Monarchy of 240 years. Today Nepal has a  "President" as "Head of State" & a "Prime Minister" heading the Govt..
  • Although the constitution was accepted, it was always intended to be temporary and on May 29, 2008, a new constitution was voted on by the Nepalese Parliament, which declared that the monarchy would be deposed and a new parliamentary republic would become the Nepalese political framework.
