The system often entrapped labourers in the debt and dependency cycle, thus allowing landlords to profit from the hard work of labourers.

Explanation:

  • Sharecropping is where families/tenants rent small plots of land from the landowner to use the land in exchange for a portion of their crop to be given to the landowner at the each year end.
  • In several cases, the landlords would lease equipment to the renters and offer food, fertilizer, seed, and other items on credit till the harvest season. At that time, the landlord and the tenant would decide who owed whom and how much
  • High rates of interest, erratic harvests, unscrupulous merchants and landlords  frequently left tenant farmers deeply indebted, causing debts to be moved to the next year or the next year. Laws benefiting owners of land made selling their crops other than owners costly to or even illegal for buyers, or prohibited sharecroppers from leaving when they had to owe debts to their landlord.
