The four teachings of Rousseau that laid the foundation of democracy is stated as follows:

a. Rousseau stated that the people are the real sovereigns and the kings merely rule with their consent.

b. He believed that the government should be based on the consent of the governer.

c. One of his famous books ‘Social Contract’ tells us about a contract between the rulers and the ruled whereby the former would guarantee freedom and happiness.

d. He sustained the doctrine of popular sovereignty.
