ANSWER :

After independence India faced many problems. One major problem was that of the formation of States. Both Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Deputy Prime Minister Vallabhbhai Patel where against the creation of linguistic States, this caused great disappointment .This caused great disappointment among Kannada speakers, speakers, the Malayalam speakers ,the Marathi speakers and the Telugu speaker because they had all looked forward to having their own states. The strongest protest came from the Telugu speaking districts of the Madras Presidency . Their leader Potti Sriramulu, a Gandhian leader, went on hunger fast demanding the formation of Andhra state to protect the interest of Telugu speakers. Meanwhile Pottti Sriramulu died. This incident intensified the situation. And it attracted much hartal and bundhs. The protest took intense form. This forced the central government to give in to the demand, and the new state of Andhra Pradesh came into existence on 1 October 1953.
