How did the theory of 'Art Brut' put forward by Jean Dubuffet get credence?

Explanation:

Art brut is a label that was created by French artist Jean Dubuffet. Dubuffet used it to describe art that was created outside the boundaries of official culture. Dubuffet focused mainly on art by those on the outside of th art scene establishment.

Dubuffet contended  that 'mainstream culture' assimilated every new development in art, and thus by so doing  whatever power it might have had. Dubuffet thus felt that genuine expression was smothered.

Art brut was the solution to this problem – only this kind of art could resist the influences of culture, immune to being absorbed and assimilated, due to the fact that the artists themselves were not willing or able to be assimilated.

Answer:

French painter Jean Dubuffet challenged the concept of ‘art brut’ in the 1940s. Before that the art of the untrained visionary was of minor interest. At about the same time ‘an untutored genius was creating paradise’. This was none other than Nek Chand, who cleared a little patch of jungle to make himself a garden sculpted with stone and recycled material known to the world today as the Rock Garden, at Chandigarh.
