Answer:

The thief gave himself away by cutting his stick short by two inches.

Explanation:

  • In the story "Birbal Caught the Thief", once a rich merchant`s house was robbed by someone. The merchant suspected that the robbers was one of his domestic help. So he went to Birbal told him the story and asked for his help. Birbal went to his house and assembled all of his servants and asked the servant who stole the merchant`s things to confess his crime but Everybody denied.
  • Birbal thought for a moment, then handed all the merchant's servants sticks of the same length and said  that tomorrow the real thief's stick would be  two inches longer. All  servants should return tomorrow with wands.
  • The servants went home and gathered in the same place the next day. Barbal asked her to show her stick. One of his servants had his cane shortened by two inches. Birbal said, "This is your thief, a merchant."
  • Later the merchant asked Birbal, "How did you get him?"
  • Birbal told him that The thief had already cut short his stick by two inches in the night fearing that his stick will get longer by two inches in the morning as Birbal said.
