The three friends spent half an hour describing their personal maladies to each other. The narrator explained to George and Harris how he felt when he got up in the morning and Harris talked about how he felt when he went to bed. George who stood on the hearth rug gave an illustrative description of his malady. George fancied that he was ill although there was never really anything the matter with him. They eventually came to share the unanimous opinion that they were suffering from the condition of being overworked. They came to the conclusion that they required rest and a complete change as their brains had been overstrained to produce a general depression throughout the system.
