The Maharaja of Pratibandhapuram, the protagonist of the story, was a man of great physical and mental strength. Due to his gallantry, he was referred as the Tiger King. It was professed that he would be killed by a tiger. The astrologer said that though the King may kill ninety-nine tigers with ease but the hundredth one will turn out to be fatal for him. The forewarning came true in the form of a toy tiger which the King gifted his son on his third birthday. The toy was made by an inexpert carpenter and so had many rough surfaces and small quill like wood all over it. One of those pierced the right hand of the King and resulted in an infection. The infection gradually spread all over his body and though three surgeons from Madras came to operate him, they couldn’t save the King.
